BODICOTE ‘A’ 92-7
(20 pts) beat WARDINGTON 102-9 (6 pts) by 2 wickets
Report conceived based
on snippets from chat in the pub afterwards.
With availability again
poor it looked like we might need to scratch another game but we dug deep into
resources to field 10 and were rewarded with a great win considering the strength
(on paper) of said 10 – Captain Scott. Stuart C, Bobby L, Balti,
Santosh, Wasim, Lewis C,
Dave Alvarez, ANother &
Barlow Si. It was good to see Si Hawken return for
his first game of the season and Barlow Si, who played for the first time since
2006. He might lack some of his brother’s (limited) ability but not his anorakaphobia and was able to point out he did play in
the 2nds first ever league game back in 1990.
On a wet wicket Bob
Lawrence was pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets, Scott and Si H took one each
and Balti held onto a skier. Even so 102 looked a
challenging total with a paper thin batting line up. Wasim
stepped up to the plate (not literally of course as still playing with the
challenge of respecting Ramadan) scoring 35. With rain reducing the target to
92, Bob L played a typically patient innings of 18 no and Scott a skipper’s
knock of 11 no in a match winning eighth wicket partnership to end the season on
a high.
So all the
effort to find a team was worthwhile. Wardington were sporting
opponents who of course have hosted Bodicote twice this season and they were
happy for a wet wicket to be cut up so that both teams could enjoy a last game
of the campaign. Bodicote secured fifth place on the back of the win.
BODICOTE ‘A’ 134
all out (5 pts) lost to GAWCOTT 135-3 (20 pts) by 7 wickets
Wasim Hussain 35.
BODICOTE ‘A’ 104

George Lawrence 74, Wasim Hussain 4-39
Saturday 7th
August
BODICOTE ‘A’ (-10 pts)
conceded to CROUGHTON (20 pts) as unable to field a side
Mass unavailability with weddings and holidays meant we only had enough for one team on Saturday. Apologies to Croughton.
BODICOTE ‘A’ 75 all out (2 pts) lost to MARSTON ‘A’
79-0 (20 pts) by 10 wickets
Welcoming back Slogger (210, Max Vazey (21) and Porge (12) were
the only batsmen to make double figures
BODICOTE ‘A’ 80 all
out (4 pts) lost to CHARLTON 204-4 (20 pts) by 3 wickets
So the 2nd team made the daunting away trip to league leaders Charlton with only 10 players with Nigel Lynes pulling out earlier in the morning. Vice captain Shaun was given the responsibility of the toss and having lost it we were asked to field.
Jay and Hasan started us off with some good tight bowling which saw reward when Hasan bowled Ryan Knight for 0 with one that nipped back through the gate. Unfortunately we were unable to easily break the partnership between Graham Knight and Brian Taylor despite both looking very rusty all of their aerial shots were just away from fielders. Graham had moved into the 20's when we was caught at square leg by 2nd team debutante Max off the bowling of Jay. Wasim had replaced Hasan from the top end and despite not giving much away he was unable to take a wicket as well. Disaster struck though for Charlton when having only faced one ball in the previous over Big Mo was run out for 0 due to a mix up between him and Brian which resulted in a furious Mo packing his bag and leaving the ground!
The captain Ollie Johnson hung around for a while for his quick 42 and him and Taylor were taking the score past 5 runs an over, helped in part due to some generous bowling by the captain Rogers. This resulted in a Dhoni-esque moment when Shaun came out from behind the timbers to bowl a couple of overs towards the end and keeping things tight we managed to restrict to Charlton to 204-4 in their 40 overs which given we only had 10 men was a good effot, Taylor finished with 100 not out but given the fact his run in the last over was all pad and no where near the bat plus another 20 odd leg byes that were given to him it was a tad generous to say the least.
After a smashing tea (best of the season) Hasan and Wasim were sent out to open the batting and made a terrifc start taking the score past 40 in the 12th over when Hasan gave Big Mo his first wicket, Rogers was in next but only lasted 2 balls when he got one that came back off the seam (pitched off the strip didn't it?) that hit leg stump and this unfrotunately brought about the start of the well known Bodicote batting collapse which saw no one else break into double figures with Jay last man out leaving Lewis stranded on 7 not out (only 193 away from the double century he promised) and left us with a crushing defeat.
BODICOTE ‘A’(10pts) drew with Gayton (10pts) no play due to rain.
BODICOTE ‘A’ (20pts) beat Willoughby 'A' (-10pts) by walkover (Willoughby failed to raise a team)
BODICOTE ‘A’ 131-8 (7
pts) lost to PRESTON CAPES ‘A’ 133-7 (20 pts) by 3 wickets
Bodicote made the trip out to Preston Capes and due to
the roadworks on the A361 we arrived for the match
with only 9 players; Hasan and Wasim
were somehow found themselves on the way to Northampton.
After winning the toss Bodicote then decided it was
best to bat first until they arrived and sent out new opening pair Adam and Wigger to start us off. They started off slow against some
good bowling before Adam was adjudged to of nicked it behind for 8 off Reeve,
after the pre game rock, paper, scissors contest winner Dan Lord was in next
and the score reached 22 in the 10th over when he was out bowled by Reeve for
7. Skipper Rogers was in next and after playing his first shot through the
covers for 4 he was out in the next over run out for 4, which left us at 26-3. Wigger’s long vigil came to an end in the 17th over for 5
with the score on 35 and a very low score on the cards.
New batsmen Shaun and Stuart started to rebuild the
innings slowly with both players searching for some form, their 70 run
partnership was the back bone of our innings and when Shaun was out for a
brutal 48 in 35th over the score had at least passed the 100 mark and some
acceleration in the last couple of overs saw us reach 131-8 at the end of the
40 overs, Stuart finishing with a very useful 30 not out.
After tea it was Nigel and Wasim
to open the bowling but it was tough going to start with as the openers started
aggressively with Hedges in particular looking to hit everything. Adam replaced
Nigel from the top end and had some joy at last in the 11th over when Pointon edged behind for 15 to leave them on 51-1. After
that nothing seemed to go our way, everything was played in the air but never
to a fielder and somehow Capes got up to 98 in the 21st over before Wasim picked up the next wicket of Garwood who top edged
one straight in the air and with no one within 30 yards of him Lewis called for
the catch and duly took it.
Rogers picked up his first wicket in the next over
when opener Hedges could only steer a bouncer into Stuart’s hands at mid-wicket
to be out for 54 but even at 105-3 it still seems inevitable. The next over saw
another wicket fall as Wasim picked up his 2nd with a
quicker ball that bowled Tarry for 4. Rogers’ next over was even more eventful
when Collins dragged on a Yorker for 0 and Hunt skied one to mid-wicket next
ball which changed the score from 124-4 to 124-7 when Wasim
picked up his 3rd in his next over, unfortunately that was it as
they nursed the extra couple of runs needed to get home in the 28th over for a
nervy 3 wicket win, in the end we were maybe 30 runs short and move on to what
should be an easy win next week against Willoughby.
Saturday 26th June
BODICOTE ‘A’ 80 - 6 (20 pts) beat WARDINGTON 79 all out (5 pts) by 4
wickets
Due to an caravan invasion Bodicote were forced to
play their home game against Wardington away instead.
We arrived to find what looked a plasticine pitch
with a massive tyre track right down the middle of it and after winning the
toss on the 2nd attempt (As I failed to actually call the 1st time) we inserted
the opposition.
Nigel and Wasim opened the bowling and
both bowled a very good controlled line, Wasim in
particular was getting some turn and a lot of bounce. Nigel was first to strike
removing opener Owen for 7, caught at square leg by Lewis. Next man in Jan was
also bowled by Nigel only for the umpire not to give it, claiming Shaun had
taken the ball and then dislodged the bails??? Luckily we weren’t left to rue
that mistake as Wasim induced a top edge the next
over to have him out for 4. Wickets were tricky after that for a while
especially as the other opener Betts was set on batting right the way through.
A change of bowling didn’t help too much as Adam’s one and only over was a tad
expensive (technically 2 overs as he bowled 12 balls including 5 wides and a no ball!), that was until he was replaced by
Jay, a combination of poor batting and decent bowling from Jay just ripped
through the rest of the Wardsington innings and he
finished with figures of 7-4-6-5, Hasan picking up
two wickets and Wardington being bowled out for 79.
There was enough time for a us to face a couple of overs before
tea which Shaun and Wigger negotiated with ease,
especially as former Culworth bowler Tucker (remember
her George?) was bowling gentle full tosses for Shaun to tuck into, 20-0 at tea
and a victory in sight.
After tea we set about doing the obvious thing, making the run
chase hard for ourselves, Shaun was out first without adding to his score of 15
with what Bob described as an unplayable delivery (thanks for that Bob!),
Rogers was in next and hit a couple of nice shots before being caught at slip
for 14, Hasan played well but was undone by a
fantastic one handed catch in the covers and when Adam, Stuart and Wigger all went bowled by Jan for single figures the signs
didn’t look good for us, fortunately Dan Lord seems to have hit form on a
Saturday and his 22 not out (which included a massive straight 6) and Wasim’s 5 not out were enough to see us home to a nervy 4
wicket win, Jan finishing with 5-22.
Saturday 19th June
BODICOTE ‘A’ (99 all out) 7 pts lost to GAWCOTT 148 all out (20 pts) by
49 runs
No full details to report from this match, Bodicote’s batting was a little
under strength with Adam Harris and Paul Rogers away at a football tournament.
Bodicote bowled well especially 2nd team debutante Nigel (Colonel
Mustard) Lynes and Wasim
picked up another 4 wickets, in truth the batting just sort of fell apart which
was evident in the fact that Jay top scored with a 30 batting at number 9.
Saturday 11th June
BODICOTE ‘A’ (157 all out) 20 pts beat
FINMERE 60 all out (7 pts) by 97
runs.
Bodicote made the
trip away to Finmere to be greeted by a well prepared
track with a very short boundary on one side and when skipper Rogers was asked
if any of his team were ‘big hitters’ he did the honourable thing and said no.
Shaun and Wigger opened the batting for us and made a
good start before Shaun was bowled by another fizzing delivery (every week?)
for 9 to bring the skipper in to join Wigger and duly
smashed his first ball through the covers for 4. He and Wigger
were batting well until a rush of blood saw the latter scoop one in the air to
be out for 10. Stu Smith was in next but he only lasted 4 balls and after
‘smashing the cover off the ball’ onto his pads he was adjudged lbw by Jay for
a duck.
No fear though as
Adam was in next and surely these two would be able to milk this attack around
for a while, this was the plan until a terrible mix up between the two saw Adam
run out (by a girl) and sulked off for 6 leaving us in a tricky situation at
40-4. Hasan was in next to join Rogers who had taken
it upon himself to up the scoring by hitting both opening bowlers out of the
attack before skying one to be out for 48. There were
some useful runs contributed down the order but the main man was Dan Lord who
was definitely in ‘the zone’ smashing the ball everywhere and after an early
tea due to rain he helped Bodicote up to 157 all out, Scott being bowled off
the last ball to leave Dan not out on 36.
Adam and Wasim took the new ball and immediately had the opposition
on the back foot with lots of playing and missing, the new tactic of short
spells from one end paid dividends when Scott bowled his 4 overs, picking up 21
wickets for just 5 runs with some fast hostile bowling. Jay took over from him
and got in on the act himself with 2 wickets in 2 balls, unfortunately he jibbed the hat-trick ball not even managing to pitch it on
the stumps (although it did only miss by roughly 2cm’s).
No batsmen ever got going for the hosts who were playing with a very under
strength team although they all got a bat (some of them twice) when Jay had the
nerve to bowl an out swinger to the number 11 who looked like he had never
picked up a ball before let alone a bat and worse of all Shaun held on to the
catch. All in all it was a good professional win.
BODICOTE ‘A’ (86 all out) 2 pts lost to CROUGHTON 87 for 1 (20 pts) by 9 wickets.
The first game in June
saw us welcome the challenge of Croughton who had only lost one game this
season, the day didn't start off well when the skipper unfortunately won the
toss (bad omen) and decided to bat first. Wigger and
Adam opened the batting and saw us make a good start with Adam hitting a couple
of nice fours in particular. Wigger was the first to
go, judged to be lbw by Shaun despite in his own
words having 'a very big stride in' and Adam was the next to go playing back to
one that kept low to be bowled, Cutle and Rogers the
new men in. They set about trying to rebuild against good straight bowling that
was keeping a touch low, things were looking good until tragedy struck when
Cutler was on 18 struck on the pad and Dan duly gave him out (going down the
slope? surely not). Shaun was in next and didn't last too long either giving a simple return catch to the bowler. In truth no-one really
got going against a good bowling side, Rogers was the next man out trying to up
the run rate but dragging on for what turned out to be a rather embarrassing
top score of 19 and we ended up bowled out inside the 40 overs for 86. We had 5
overs to bowl before tea but despite a number of plays and missed we were
unable to get any wickets.
After tea went the
same as before with opener Hussain for Croughton in particular edging everything without anything
going to hand, we didn't help ourselves with a few dropped catches along the
way but in truth 86 runs was never going to be enough against a good side and
we only took 1 wicket to finish the match with a very heavy 9 wicket defeat.
Saturday 28th May
BODICOTE ‘A’ (174 for 8) 20 pts beat MARSTON ST
LAWRENCE ‘A’ 163 for 8 (9 pts) by 11 runs
Bodicote made the trip away to 2nd placed Marston hoping to bounce back from
the heavy defeat to Charlton the week before, the skipper was hoping to keep up
the tradition of losing the toss = winning the match and duly lossed the toss and was asked to bat by the oppositon.
Due to a lack of openers it was Rogers and Harris who went out to open
the innings and they were kept quiet by the first couple of overs as the ball
was moving around, Rogers was the first to fall without him or the team
troubling the scorers, caught at slip. The next man in Cutler set about the
rebuild with Shaun and they were doing a very good job, Shaun is particular
starting to look good until tragedy stuck and a mix up between the pair ended
up with Shaun being run out, next man in Stuart didn’t last long, a leading
edge chipping an easy catch to mid off. Dan Smith was the new batsmen and
having spent some time in the nets before he went in must have lot his bearings as he gave some catching practice to the
bowler and he too was gone.
Never fear though as our form batsmen Adam was in next and after getting
his eye in (1, sometimes 2 balls) he was away, him and Cutler rescued the
innings from 40-4 and started to see the runs flow, Adam in particular cashing
in on some wayward bowling adding another 3 sixes to his league total and for
the 3rd time in 3 weeks taking the ultimate liberty in reverse sweeping a
bowler for 4. He was eventually run out (again by Cutler, he doesn’t like them
Harris boys) for 57. Some more useful hitting down the order including two
cracking straight sixes from Santosh and another front
foot straight smash from Dan saw us reach a very good total of 174-8 at the end
of the innings, Cutler with a valuable if not slow 50 not out.
After a cracking tea Bodicote entered the field in a jubilant mood and
despite only having the 10 fielders were really fired up. Dan Smith and Adam
opened the bowling and both started very well beating the bat on numerous
occasions. Dan was the first to strike when he induced an edge from captain birdseye and Rogers caught well in
the slips, after trying and failing to hit every ball he faced the number 3 was
bowled by a cracker from Dan. The new man in Riddle looked a decent batsmen and
along with the other opener Atkin put on 50 for the
next wicket before Riddle edged another delivery from Dan and was superbly caught
by a one handed diving catch from the skipper Rogers to queue ridiculous
celebrations from the whole team, we knew we were on top. Jay replaced Dan
after his opening spell, 12 – 5 – 26 – 3 and was soon beating the bat nearly
every ball with some super swing bowling. Unfortunately after having replaced
Adam at the other end Rogers had a little less control and as a result Marston
started to sneak closer to their target. Marston had moved up to 132-4 after 35
so needed just 8.5 an over with 6 wickets left to reach their target, Jay was
having none of that though and despite giving away two easy fours at the start
of the over also picked up two wickets, one a cracking catch from Dan Smith,
ala Stuart Broad from the day before. Adam was back into the attach at the
other end and after finally getting out opener Atkins for 58 (54 of which came
off the edge) in his last over he completed a set of wicket, wide, wicket, wide
to leave them needing over 20 from the last over and Jay held his nerve to see
us home by 11 runs, a really good close game and a great away win against a
tough team.
Saturday 21st May
BODICOTE ‘A’ 79 all
out (3 pts) lost to CHARLTON 80-2 (20 pts) by eight wickets
An unbeaten Bodicote side hosted Charlton in their first home game of the
season and after winning the toss for the first time this season decided to bat
first.
Shaun and Wigger opened the batting on a decent track
and lasted 4 overs before Shaun was well caught at midwicket from a low full
toss by Big Mo and went for 6. Rogers was the next man in but he too was out in
Big Mo’s next over slicing to cover for 0. Cutler was the next man in and along
with Wigger took their time to nurse the score up to
37 in the 15th over when Wigger fell, a leading edge
looping staright n the air to fall for 9, the start
of an awful over that resulted in a 3 wicket maiden and two of our batsmen
heading back for ducks. Adam and Cutler played the ball around well until
Taylor struck again in the 23rd over bowling Cutler for 22 with one that cut back
in off the seam and was again on a hat-trick as Dan was out lbw
first ball and we were 49-7 at the end of the over. After starting to run out
of batsmen at the other end Adam went on the attack and got to 20 before we has
bowled by Taylor and by the time Hasan chipped to mid
off to go for 9 we had only made it to 79, Taylor finishing with 7-27 and not a
target that’s easy to defend.
We had a couple of overs to go through before tea and Adam started off
very quick from the tree end, both Knight openers could barely get bat on ball
let alone play a shot and this paid off in the next over when Wasim repaed the benefit of the
pressure bowling Ryan Knight for 7 and also getting B Taylor out for nothing in
the same over, a massive swipe inducing a top edge and Shaun pouching easily.
After tea Charlton took a better approach to their batting and in the
end easily knocked off the runs to get a comfortable 8 wicket victory, much
better performance needed next week.
BODICOTE ‘A’ 212 all out
(20 pts) beat GAYTON 75-5 (7 pts) by faster run rate (rain stopped play)
The second home game of the season saw Bodicote
entertain a Gayton said who were still struggling to
get a full team out so we were shocked when having won the toss they decided to
field first given they only had 7 present with another 2 on the way. Wigger and Wasim opened the
batting for Bodicote but neither was able to last very long, both falling to
opening bowler Drayton for single figures. Rogers and Harris looked to steady the
ship for Bodicote and put on 40 for the next wicket, Shaun edging behind for
his 16. Debutante Santosh was the next man in but he
didn’t last long as he checked his shot and chipped it straight to mid off,
Adam was the new batsmen and another 56 was put on before Rogers finally fell
for 64 (including a 6 hit on top of the village hall).
Barlow joined Adam at the crease and was soon being
forced into reluctantly running 2's and 3's to keep the run rate up, after
bringing his 50 up in style with a huge 6 Adam was out attempting the same shot
to be bowled for 51. Useful additions down the order including a cracking shot
from new 6's league member Hasan saw Bodciote bowled out on the last ball of the innings for
212.
Gayton's innings started very slowly with Hasan
the most impressive bowler in the opening spell but it was Adam who took the
first wicket, bowling opener Reeve for 1. Neither bowler was able to make
another breakthrough as the opposition set upon batting some time rather than
any runs until Barlow was introduced from the shed end and started the collapse
which saw him take 4-16 including at least one that spun that left Gayton on 75-5 when the rain came and an inevitable
Bodicote win on a healthier run rate.
Comment of the day has to be when the rain started
coming batsmen Reed from Gayton said "Come on
let's stay out, I want to play" the next ball he was stumped by Shaun who
replied "Play time’s over".
BODICOTE ‘A’ 308-8 (20
pts) beat WILLOUGHBY 'A' 72 all out (5 pts) by 236 runs
The second match of the season saw Bodicote take the
trip to Willoughby hoping to repeat the first teams win there last week, the
pitch as expected with the overnight rain was not brilliant and in hindsight
had Bodicote won the toss they would have been bowling first but alas they
didn't and they were inserted in to bat.
Craig and Wigger opened the
batting and comfortably saw off any new ball worries as they put on over 80 for
the first wicket before Craig was bowled for 49, Rogers was the next man in
hoping not to follow up last week's duck with another and survived a scare when
on 4, top edging the ball straight into the air only for no fielder to seem
interested in catching the ball as it safely dropped to the ground, Wigger was out soon after in the same manner as Craig which
brought Shaun to the crease, these two knocked it around effortlessly to put on
another 80 runs before Shaun was caught off the bowling of Proudman
for 26, Stuart was the next man in and was on his way back 3 balls later,
bowled through the gate to give Mohammed his 3rd wicket of the day. Wasim was in next and he and Rogers looked to up the run
rate with 1's and 2's which lasted a couple of overs before it seemed that
boundaries were the much better idea, Rogers was out in the 29th over, just 5
short of his century and useful knocks down the order including a rapid 49 not
out from Adam saw us to one of the best saturday
scores recorded finishing with 308 for 8, we had done well.
The Willoughby innings never really got going with a
top score of 16 telling you all you needed to know, good opening spells from
both Adam and Hasan saw them pick up 3 wickets beween. Jay came into the attack to replace Adam and bowled
well without much luck including a massive nick behind off the Willoughby
captain who failed to walk but it was Wasim who
starred with the ball this week, taking 5-21 with his electric off spin to
knock over the opposition for 72 for a massive 236 run win.
Saturday 1st May
BODICOTE ‘A’ 143 all out (20 pts) beat
PRESTON CAPES 'A' 43 all out (5 pts) by 91 runs
