BODICOTE 135 tied KINGS SUTTON 135

In years the old folk of Bodicote will look at this as the one that got away. How did Bodicote not win this game?  It was a very odd game with some of the worse catching you have ever seen, Craig Irvine was already taking guard when the King Sutton keeper dropped George Lawrence off an absolute sitter. Despite only ever being in control of the game for the first two and last two overs Bodicote managed to secure a tie from the jaws of victory.

To the game and it was certainly a mixture of youth and experience that took to the field and looked eager to make an impression on captain Batli. Adam Harris and Pat Knight opening the bowling and after two over Kings Sutton found themselves 1-2, with Batli taking an amazing catch, amazing as he caught it, and Harris cleaning up their other opening bat who looked like he had wintered well.

Knight continued to bowl a tight and useful line and really should have ended up with more wickets that he got. Batli was back to form with a dropped chance of Harris before Andrew Stanley and George Lawrence both dropped the same ball, again off the luckless Knight. After Knight finished his spell he was keen to show the fielders how it wad done but only succeeded in dropping the second easiest catch of the evening and then jarring his knee while not doing anything.

Youngster, Craig Lynes got some tap into the tennis courts but then came back and bowled their number 4 and Bodicote were back in control. Kings Sutton kept on playing their shots and the tennis court certainly got some action, and the sight of tennis players ducking for cover and not knowing where to run is a sight to behold. It was commented that "The batsmen got more in the court than they did..." but this seemed a little harsh....

A few more runs were scored and a useful last over from Balti meant that Bodicote were chasing 135 or 136 for victory.

Stanley and Lawrence were sent in to smash the balls to all parts. Fresh from his 1st ball duck of the season Stanley eased into things before opening up and if he had been their at the end Bodicote would have won this easily. Lawrence was first to go for 17 before Stanley and Irvine, whose last sporting action was the Men's England Hockey Harrod UK Trophy final which Banbury won 6-2, put on a useful contribution before Stanley played one attacking shot to many and was caught hooking. PT entered the fray and looked like he was going to smash it to all parts but kept missing it but he would find his form later in the innings. Irvine went for a useful 25 and then PT found it was useful to use is bat and smacked a couple of big shots before he fell and with Bodicote needing 24 of four overs this game could go either way.

Runs were scored and wickets were taken and in the last over Bodicote needed 6 off 6 and then 1 off three, but in typical Bodicote fashion they did not make it. There were three run outs and the last ball was all action, with Bodicote needing two to win. Craig Lynes was facing and a leg side wide and a Balti run out meant that King Sutton had tied the game…or had they.... Hobbling out, and a bit late, was Pat Knight and with the scores tied, surely they had to win…

Last ball, a swish from Knight, a miss and a run out and King Sutton somehow got a point from this game. It was typical Bodicote and I am sure Captain Balti will have some serious words with his side about their catching and finishing off the game. Too many batsman got scores and got out, but this was the first game of the season and next week it is Deddington at Kings Field.
