TOUR 2005- SANITISED REPORT FROM SIMON WOODRUFF.

10 July  v Llandovery

BCC enjoyed another sun-soaked tour of Wales, starting at Llandovery who have a picturesque ground. Unfortunately due to a double booking this was denied to us, instead we were allocated the school astro, which seemed to be halfway through haymaking. The outdoor changing facilities at least allowed us to intimidate the 9 man local team with our honed physiques (take a bow Gary). Things started promisingly with a 2nd wicket partnership of 47 between Sid (20) and the Barbarian (33).JP showed his inexperience as captain by talking up our chances and thinking about retiring batsmen at 25. The inevitable collapse of 7-39 followed, as Llandovery noticed our vulnerability to JP'esque pace. A last wicket partnership of 23 between Porger (17) and Inzaman (12*) bumped us up to an inadequate total of 122, and provoked the normally tranquil Inzy to moan about having 'to bat with dodgy 2nd team players'. Inzy's fury was transmitted into a ferocious opening spell, returning a classy 0-21 off 3 overs and only missing the strip completely on one occasion. Given that Porger was the leading wicket taker with 2-21 off 2 overs, there was precious little hope and Llandovery knocked off the runs for 6 wickets in 18 grim overs. Balti's pregnancy developed nicely, as had to leave the field to cope with the start of his contractions, laying in the foetal position under a hedge (more later)

11 July v Bronwydd

Day two of the tour dawned red hot, just like the winner of the Bodicote Open, played at spectacular Carmarthen GC. The Balster completed a historic Grand Slam of the 2005 golf majors, despite the treat of enormous bowel movements and further contractions, which worryingly for his partners were coming at ever decreasing intervals. We then travelled to picturesque Bronwydd, scene of a disastrous 1998 tour defeat. The previous days' poor batting carried on with a grim 12-4 showing after 5 overs. However things looked up with a partnership of 77 off 8 overs by Simon Pollard and S.W, who departed for 32. Polly carried on to a splendid 71*, giving us a good total of 141-6.More fineable offences were incurred by golf champion Balster, who, having forgotten to throw his golf ball to the crowd earlier, made up for it by throwing his bat after a golden duck. George 'ASBO Boy' Lawrence slept through most of the innings under a hedge, blatantly attracting the wrath of zealous fines chairman Festa. In reply BCC gained remarkable momentum through Polly and Inzamam bowling in tandem and conceding only 9 runs from 4 overs. However as the bowling declined from the dizzy standards set by these cult bowlers, Bronwydd through skipper Wayne Mitchell (88) moved ever closer to victory.6 runs were needed from 2 balls with Mitchell on strike, when experienced Sid struck with the help of a now conscious Porger behind the stumps to remove the danger man. A wicket with his final ball by Sid ensured victory, and the tantalising prospect of being on a hat-trick for a least a year. Other bowling performances of note were Festa 2-20 and Porger and JP with buffet efforts of 0-24 & 0-20 respectively off 2 overs each.

12 July v Drefach

The final day of tour brought an early fitness (and fatness) session on the beach, followed by an afternoon laying around in various recovery positions watching the cricket at base. On the health front, it was a great relief to all that the Balster had finally had a result from the many packets of turbo-lax which he had consumed over the course of the tour, and was proud to announce the birth of triplets. An evening game at Drefach turned into a beer match, as the home side could only field 7.However the 7 weren't bad and threatened to embarrass a jaded BCC side, reaching 148-6 with the help of JP sportingly giving two of their batsman another life and allowing a last man stand, complete with a requirement that the batsman say 'in' at the end of each run. Accordingly this game will not be granted 8th class status. For those interested in strange games the BCC fielders who played for Drefach let the home side down by dropping the Barbarian several times(Inzy, JP, Polly),with Stuart showing much zeal to dive full length and catch Gazza first ball. In reply the Balster added to the feeling of farce by failing to notice that the pitch had also been marked for a junior match, and thus was stumped by 4 feet whilst being confident of being in. Porger and the Barbarian lashed with glee to set up Sid and Polly for a final dash to a fairly meaningless win. An excellent tour of which these reports are but a sample as of course what goes on tour stays on tour, but if you see Sid in a dress don't be too surprised
